There are at least two extraordinary merits to my bargain of the week from Waitrose.
One is Vignale Pinot Grigio 2011's sheer deliciousness. It is from the source of most of Italy's Pinot Grigio, the Veneto region (the hinterlands of Venice) but it is plump and ripe in the Alsace manner, hugely more interesting than most Veneto PG, dry but smoky with suggestions of honey and grapiness.
The next best thing about it is the price, £4.99.
It is easily the best-value PG I have tasted all year, and a strong contender not just for the last of the summer wine, but the first of autumn.
NB Not all wines are available in all stores
